Resumo | The AMAZONICA and CTLUC project aims to estimate the carbon balance of the Amazon basin with regular greenhouse measurements and quantify the key controlling components of the balance consistent with these data. The ultimate goal is to improve prediction of the climate and potential feedbacks with the land vegetation and land use change of the system. We attempt to obtain an integral large-scale green house gas (CO2, CH4, N2O) balance using regular aircraft based vertical profile measurements and continuous analyzers at selected locations sampling the main air-stream across the basin. Vertical profile measurements are complemented by surface station sampling at the basin boundaries and in the interior. Greenhouse gas concentration measurements have started recently and will extend over a period of 3.5 years. Synthesis of these data will, in essence, be based on comparison of the spatial distribution in time of the greenhouse gas concentration field over the Amazon with model predictions based on on-ground processes and atmospheric transport modelling. On-ground processes include (i) biomass changes of intact rainforests estimated from forest censuses in collaboration with the RAINFOR and MOORE grant projects, (ii) monthly spatial distributions of deforestation and biomass burning using remote sensing, (iii) annual land cover and land use dynamics in the areas detected in (ii), (iv) river CO2 efflux based on regular in-situ measurements and (v) targeted flux studies in rich soil and seasonally flooded systems. The synthesis component will use various inverse methods including an adaptation of Carbon Tracker to South America. The predictive component will be based on the ED-Jules land surface and vegetation dynamics models coupled to the regional climate model BRAMS and the Hadley Center Climate Model. The purpose of the presentation is to introduce the project strategy and present first results. |
